A broken connection will certainly prevent a coil from firing.  I presume you still have the original coil, if you are a glutton for punishment you could stick the original one back in and see if it works.  If it does then that would tell you the connection was broken earlier.
 
If you don't need/want the two coils you got from me I'll be glad to take them off you hands for the same price.

Hi Ed, Welcome back!
Actually, I'm not sure that all the problems are identified. 
1.  I replaced the leading coil which did not fire.
2.  Running the wires revealed a broken connection.
3.  when repaired, the coils fired perfectly.
What we don't know for sure: When was the connector broken?  I think from a  strain while replacing the coil, but I'm not sure if it did not happen some time back with the previous coil.
Conclusion: Protect the coils (and other stuff) from the exhaust radient heat.
