I am not certain about the getting old part

case, after the torrential rains Monday night (for which Friends had fortunately
convinced me to share their motel room) and the snoring the rest of the week, I
am just about convinced to do the same.

I had forgotten about that possibility.
That might also account for the lower than normal alternator voltage
(drawing current through a shorted cell). Been recovering from 6
nights of camping amongst snoring campers and resulting sleep deprivation
{:>), so need to get back out to the aircraft and check things
out.

Hi Ed, if you discharge a battery
below 10V they are sometime permanently damaged. You may have a
shorted cell that makes the alternator work
harder? Bulent
