Hi All
Removed the EC3 and reinstalled the EC2 this afternoon. So I’ve got back the coil and injector diagnostics. Should also have my backup CAS and autotune.
Still pondering why the diagnostics and autotune weren’t working on the EC3.
Hope to retune early this week before getting back to flight testing.

Steve,

I have attached the EC2 to EC3 wiring conversion chart I made back when I swapped mine. It may not be any help other than add more confusion. Bobby

Hi Bobby
I have no idea at this stage. I have Neil Ungers EC3 which I installed as I thought it was an upgrade from my EC2 but ‘m not sure of the code version etc.
I was interested in the possibilities of the ‘knock’ detection but do not know if Tracy implemented this feature.
I can reprogram my EC2 (some years back - will need to reacquaint myself with MPLABS) but haven’t put time enough into working out MPLABS for the EC3 chips yet.

So I’ll reinstall the EC2 and go from there.

Cheers

Steve

Steve,

Has your EC3 stopped working or is it only the coil test mode that's not functioning? I believe some of the early EC3's may not support autotune or may require an EM3 for autotune to work. Bobby

Hi all.

Having done further testing this morning (replaced head unit and checked wiring) with no joy I will remove the EC3 and install our EC2 which previously had a functioning coil diagnostic routine.

The other thing that currently is not functioning on ther EC3 is the Autotune. Now I do recall Autotune functioning but I cant remember if this was when I had the EC2 installed or after swapping it out for the EC3.
I shall find out when I get a moment to head down to the airfield.

And Bill, I checked my wiring on the D585 coils and I have earthed them directly to the gearbox adapter plate.

Cheers

That makes sense.
So after the engine rebuild, the engine didn’t run and the test function didn’t function either?
I’m in a situation where the engine runs but I cant access the coil diagnostic function.
Thanks for helping me think through my situation.

When my plane was sold, the purchaser had the engine rebuilt and reinstalled in the plane. In the process of removal, the ground from the coils to the engine (direct) was cut, and then when the engine was returned from the builder, the stub wire on the oil-pan was no longer there, the result was that spark testing from the EC-2 did not work, no spark. After considerable diagnostics, we determined that the coil ground was missing, when put back in place, the unit worked as it should.

Thanks Rich. Helpful should it come to that.
Just dont understand why the diagnostic which turns all coils on at 3000 rpm is not working.
I’ll have another go at it tomorrow.

Of course there is a simple way of testing for a small cost with no damage potential and that is to use an inductive automotive timing light. You just clip it around a high tension line with the plug screwed and torqued I place , crank the engine and watch the flash or lack thereof. Rich

Why is that Bobby?
I’m trying to remember how I routed the negative to the coils. I know the suppressor capacitors go direct to gearbox plate.

Just make sure to position / secure the plugs so than cannot fall off

This is what the manual says:
"Remove all the spark plugs from the engine (or connect the plug wires

to spare plugs) and lay them on the engine where you can see the spark

gaps. Make sure the body of the plug is in contact with something grounded to the engine. Now put the Mode switch in Mode 8 and press
the
Store switch. This puts the EC3 in ignition diagnostic mode and fires all the coils as if the engine were running at about 3000 RPM. You should see all plugs firing. To end this diagnostic mode, change the Mode switch selection or cycle the power off on the EC3."
(EC3-A8 13B ENGINE CONTROLLER 07-30-13 INSTALLATION AND PROGRAMMING GUIDE 2008 series)

Sure you've got +12V power to the coils?
Are the coils properly grounded?
Coils wired correctly to EM3?
Note the different coil pin-outs from brand to brand.

If yes, I guess you'll have to inspect the program code.

Hi Guys

For those of you with EC3???s.
I wanted to check all coils were firing yesterday so plugged the
leads into plugs laying on the top of the engine.
I tried to enter the coil diagnostic with Mode 8 and pressing Store.
I got nothing.
So I checked the injector diagnostic Mode 1 Cold Start plus Store and
the injectors all lit up.
Am I missing/forgetting/Misreading the manual or something else?

Cheers
