David, the water pump in the car is not a positive displacement pump. The
moment the impeller is exposed to air it will stop sucking. You are
assuming
that the pump will suck all the liquid gradually from the radiator until
dry.
This can happen if the radiator was on top of the engine, or the pump was
the self priming type, which is not the case.

True.  I personally am not concerned about when the pump stops pumping in a
leak situation - I hope to have indication of leak and be on ground before
that unhappy event ever happens!
