You did everything right, Chris. Keeping a calm (relative speaking) head paid dividends for you (and the aircraft). You can only do the best you can with the situation you are served and you clearly did. I've always said I would rather go off the long end doing 20 mph than end up 20 mph short of airspeed on the front end of the runway.
However, to claim the Engine Out mantle, you have to be more than 5 miles from the airport when the engine quits (and still make it to the airport) {:>).
Don't how hot it may have been - but quitting with lower engine rpm (such as pulling back on throttle in the pattern) and having an hard time restarting could indicate excess or disprupted fuel flow due to fuel percolating in the lines. Do you have a boost pump you keep on when in the pattern. I found that even a 6 psi facet pump did wonders in reducing percolation in the fuel line on hot days.

I flew this morning over my controlled field (EFD) for about 30 minutes and all went well. Mustered the guts to take my first trip out of the pattern to a local airport (LVJ). Flew over LVJ for a few minutes and awkwardly entered the pattern. Awkward as I was moving must faster than I am use to. Down to pattern altitude of 800 feet but was close to the opposite numbers. Started to correct for downwind and the engine quite. WTF!!
Saw that since I was closer runway 32, made a descending S turn (kinda) and came over 32 fast. The plane wanted to keep flying. I bleed off speed and lowered the speed brake as I used up runway with the wind behind me, sat her down at about the correct 80 knt's and applied my human powered anti lock brakes and coasted to the last turn off. The 4000' runway seemed to pass quickly compared to my home fields 9000'.
A buddy of mine was right behind me in his RV-8, recognizing me in the pattern. He landed and stopped. I then got a group from the airport who had heard my radio traffic and watched my landing.
The engine started with some difficulty and ran a little rough as I taxied it to the tie down area.
My buddy with the RV gave me a ride back to our home airport in his plane. I am here thinking about which tools I may need to take over there. I have yet to pull the cowl. I may take a breath and wait until tomorrow as I only have a couple of hours of sunlight left.
Just needed to share/purge and wrap my head around this.
On a positive note, I flew twice today and left the pattern........ :-/
