I've had my Dodge Dakota since 2000.  I've got 202,000 miles on it.  For the past five or six years, I've changed the oil when I've gotten tired of adding make up oil.  Before that, I used whatever was cheapest at the parts store I happened to find myself, or whatever the lube shop put in it.  This is generally called abuse of a perfectly good engine.  I will keep running it this way till it keels over and I can replace it with a Jeep, because at this point I'm looking for an excuse to buy a knew vehicle.  I've had 3 fender-benders that left me laying in the back seat, and the thing is no longer comfortable to ride in.  The front bumper air dam is held on by a ratchet strap.  I quit caring a while back.

The point is, "I used oil X, and the motor didn't die" is not a particularly helpful statement.

One thing that I always made sure of, is that I picked the right viscosity for the season I changed the oil in.  10W40 in summer, and 10W30 in winter.  Though, I don't think it mattered, because I would run the w30 most of the way through summer, and then the w40 well into the winter.
