I agree, Brian
Military life like any - had its plus and minus -
but, having the feeling that you were contributing to something other than your
own personal self adds a dimension that few careers/callings can
match. I had never intended to made it a career - but, even
after retiring in 1985 and going into industry to work another 15 years
(where I also met numerous very capable individuals), there was never the sense
of a "mission" as I found in the military. Others who serve, law
inforcement, health care, etc, I am sure share a similar
feeling.
Can't really imagine what life would have been like
without the military career. Probably would have ended up running my
home town radio/television repair shop until it stopped being economical to
repair them rather than throw them out and buy a new one.
And then to get into this crazy alternative
engine stuff and all the characters it brings out of the woodwork and then
ending up with my small (very) business of designing, building and selling a few
electronic gadgets - I mean how much fun and enjoyment can one person be
entitled to {:>)??

I spent 20 years in the Air Force- 4 active, 6 in the California ANG, and
then 10 in the Reserves. Loved it. Now, at work lots of guys come up and confess
that that was the one real regret that they have in life- that they did not
serve. I haven't heard anyone say that it was wasted time.

Thanks, Chris
It was truly an honor to serve our country - besides, I had a great time,
met tremendous individuals, make some contributions, etc. What more can you
ask for.
