John, years ago, in California, I found out that all sorts of auto repair facilities used ether to help start diesel engines during the winter. It turned out, that this practice created such a high pressure in the cylinder, that the head bolts would stretch. To make matters worse, these outfits would reuse the same bolts, instead of replacing them as is mandatory for any diesel head bolt after it is used and torqued down the first time, after claiming that a head gasket needed replacement.
Just my 2C's worth.

Earnest, a spray bottle with gasoline, wow!, that sure scares me to death, there must be a better way. I sprayed some WD-40 into the aircleaner on our large diesel tractor with the air filter out while my son was cranking it, a fireball the size of a two bushel basket came out and wearing only a T-shirt, it removed all the hair from my arm, I never knew a diesel to backfire before.
