You might check out the unit Ed at Tech Welding came up with. Their web site is www.TechWelding.com
it was down for reformatting the site but should be up soon. Anyway, Ed has put a lot of thought and work into a lightweight welded unit. Welders find welded solutions, machinists find machined solutions. Weldments often come out lighter because they start out with thin wall material, machinists start out with a chunk of metal and try to remove the excess.
 
We're trying to find some middle ground but specifically for our engine; the least amount of metal needed to turn the I/O of the pump 90* and terminate in a pair of Wiggans couplings. I think if you look at Mark's that is what you will see although he says it is heavy and I believe him. We will put a non venting cap on top  as a convenient fill point and two taps for the turbo cooling.
