Hi Bob,

I installed a p-port 20b in my Lancair ES last December/January.  While I have flown it some, I have mostly been reworking various systems.  So, I have very little flight time on it as of June.  I have fabricated a new slide-throttle and intake manifold, and built a new tangential exhaust.  I'm currently installing a Renesis water pump and housing.  But mostly, I've been racking my brain to figure out why I can't get over 5800 rpm.  I suspect the exhaust and/or intake is too restrictive.  Lynn H. has stated that p-port motors are very sensitive to exhaust back pressure.  I am also looking into the ignition system as a possible culprit.  I"ll probably end up building another exhaust system before it is said and done.

As for the motor, it runs strong, in the rpm range where it does run.  Right now it doesn't want to idle very smoothly, but then I don't spend much time idling.  ;-)   It would be nice to have a nice smooth idle.

There are no leaks, oil or water, which I can't say for my first engine.

Oil temps are a bit higher which would be expected with extra hp.

Bottom line... would I go this route again.  Probably not.  There have been a number of "surprises" which I hadn't planned for, like the exhaust system.  However, the p-port intake was a piece of cake to fabricate compared to building a 3-rotor side port intake.

I did do one "economy cruise" speed run and found that I had picked up an amazing 10-12 kts over the side-port motor.  By "economy cruise" I am referring to running WOT at 5200 rpm, M/T electric prop set to 1700 rpm.  Old motor would cruise at 158-159 kts TAS.  With the new motor I am seeing 170-172kts TAS.  There may be more speed/hp there, if I can get it tuned correctly.

Hope this helps,
Mark

in his Lancair ES in Austin..............I am not aware of anyone currently flying a

Is anyone flying with a Mazda 13B peripheral port engine?  If so, how is it working?  Can you describe the advantages and disadvantages?

Thanks,

Bob Rogers
