Those units serve two functions. Yes they can cool the oil as a secondary cooler in conjunction with your air-flow oil cooler but they can also help maintain a constant oil temperature at altitude in conditions where the oil temp would drop to a less than optimal temperature.

I plan to incorporate both.

Agreed.  I like my combination of oil/air and oil/water cooling.  I think some coupling there has advantages.
