Al, if the law says "5-gallon containers" get a different size. I actually use 6 gallon containers.

Ben, Charlie, Mike;

Good idea – but guess what.  6-gal gas containers are against the law in California; so they’re not sold here, and if you order from somewhere else, they won’t ship them here.  Not like there would be any chance of getting the required “written permission” from the airport director.

If the airport has taken

Federal funds in the past, I'm pretty sure that they cannot legally

prevent you from fueling your own plane.

Charlie:

Might be interesting to chat with some expert, but they probably can restrict the use of 5-gallon containers, and they probably can require written permission for the airport director.  It’s probably time to carry out my 2-year old plan of a 50-70 gal transfer tank with 12v pump in the back of my van. Then get the written permission.  Just procrastinating on spending the $350 or more that it would take. I’m thinking of checking the local truck salvage for a saddle tank about the right size.

Why the move to French Valley? That airport has never felt particularly user friendly the times I've flown into it. Your comments do nothing to change my opinion.

The hangar I was in at Ramona changed ownership, and the new owner wants all the space for his own toys.  There were no others available at Ramona, and hangars at French Valley are nicer, less expensive, and an easier drive from where I live (although still too far, 33 mi.).

But fly on up and we’ll have lunch at the nice café there. Ramona had no place to eat at the airport. Other then the over-regulation, I’ve found the actual people around the airport very friendly.  There is an RV8 right next door, another Velocity one hangar over, and a Lancair across the way. They probably need to do more runway sweeping though; after my first flight out of there the tip of one of the prop blades was smashed like it had picked up something about ¾” in size and heavy enough rip up the last inch of the fiberglass on the Catto prop.  That’s a more likely issue with the prop in back – the nose wheel kicks something up and it hits the prop.
