I used a glass sight gauge, built for hydraulic tanks. Attaches through two drilled holes in the side of the tank, so you have to have access to the backside (my youngest son can still get his hand through the filler). Each side is sealed with a butyl o-ring. Heavier than a simple tube, I'm sure, but I'll never worry about the aluminum shielded glass leaking fuel.
