I've been told by a machinist that tapped holes in aluminum are weak.  Any truth to that?

Well, yes, seeing as how aluminum is weaker that steel, I think that statement makes sense.  If it were a thin piece of aluminum I might be concerned,  but it looks at least 3/8" perhaps 1/2" thick.  Tapped holes to hold on a light throttle body with those size bolts will have no problem what soever.
