That's what I did on my 20B (RB Wagoner thick wall SS bends). Heat radiating from the exhaust was high, so last weekend I bit the bullet and fabricated a shield out of thin SS, but haven't tested it yet. The exhaust manifold has 21 hrs on it with no signs of self-destruction. Ed Anderson used the RB Wagoner bends and has hundreds of hours on it with no failures that I'm aware of..

R and B Wagoner railing systems has some thick wall 304 Stainless that would work well close to the engine. Then you can wrap the thick walled stuff with heat tape and really cut down the under cowl temps.
