Is it permissible or advisable to use some sort of nylon washer
inside
the fitting to get an airtight seal?

Ernest,
They make a seal just
for these 37 degree fittings. They seem to be really soft aluminum, and
I've used them successfully once before. I've also polished
the sealing surfaces when I've seen a scratch, and that's worked as
well. Good luck.
