Haven't read the article yet but I agree with all your points Kelly.
I'll be interested to see the entire context of that quote. Wonder if they
would be critical of Burt Rutan if he said something like "Our entire
space program cost less than what NASA spent on an O-ring
study" (which would be a true statement, BTW).
As I experiment more with engines and airplanes, I realize that there are
more factors in evaluating aircraft performance than I ever suspected. I
realize that they can't all be addressed in a short magazine article but they
should acknowledge this fact.
I also wonder if this is the article that they mentioned to Ed
Anderson. I think Ed offered some input and suggested they contact me if
they were interested in auto conversions that had flown over 300(?) hours
or so. Sounds like they didn't want any other input because they never
bothered to contact me. I also sent them an article about a year ago but
they had no interest in publishing it.

Subject: [FlyRotary] Sport Aviation Recip
vs Rotary Article
Group,
After reading the flight test article between two
Lycoming and two Powersport
powered RV-8's one would be lead to believe that there is a great
disparity between
the Lycoming and the Rotary in fuel consumption.........Someone correct
me if I
am wrong but it is my understanding that the so called single lever
engine control
system of the Powersport engine lacks a pilot controlled
leaning system and runs
the engine at a "one size fits all situations" air/fuel mixture
which those of us on this
list know is neither optimized for best power nor leaning........
This situation would seem to call for
educating some people with some "Real
World Information" about fuel consumption of the Rotary from
those of the group that are now flying with an EFI (Tracy's EC-2) that allows
full mixture control !!
The question is can we at the grassroots level have our
collective voices heard
and command a glossy and flashy seven page article to present our side of
the
story (heck even a couple of pages) ? Tracy was mentioned in what
almost
sounded like a slap as "Bragging his engine cost less than his
headset".......The
problem with that is that it was true !! IMHO
(Rant Over)
