BTW, I'm not sure I'm going to let Bob get away with saying that- "It isn't
uncommon for the Lycomings to need a top after a few hundred hours.".  If
the engine is broken in properly, and wasn't a run out pile of junk to begin
with (insert favorite Lycoming joke here <g>), this will not be the case.  Cheers,

I copied this from a Lycoming web page: (emphasis added on two point)

"If the new, rebuilt, or overhauled engine starts its TBO cycle with new
cylinders and is treated to PROPER OPERATION, good maintenance, and
FREQUENT FLIGHTS, it should reach the recommended TBO without a top
overhaul along the way. An overhauled engine that has reconditioned
cylinders is not necessarily a candidate for a top overhaul, but it is
very likely that it will require cylinder replacement before the
recommended TBO is reached."

Proper operation includes avoiding shock cooling which is an easy error
to commit.  As for frequent flights, I see a strong parallel between
airports and marinas. Most airplanes and most sailboats spend a lot
more time unused than used.  So, I sort of agree with you.  If the
engine is broken in properly, not abused, and flow at least once a
week, it will go a lot farther.  I'm not sure what to think about their
last line.  If you start with reconditioned cylinders, it won't need a
top, you will just have to replace the cylinders???

PS:  How do you get an RV-8 assembled this fast and still keep up with
this email list?
