Ernest,
It's a great question. However, make sure that you're comparing apples to apples. The computation is harder, unfortunately, than just figuring out labor at shop rates.
Contary to rumor, there is some labor time involved in installing Lycomings. And some additional costs You've still got to buy a mount. Lycomings sometimes come with or without all the accessories, which then may be purchased separately. Fabricate some cowling baffles for your updraft or downdraft cooling system. Put on an Ellison fuel injector system? Add that in. Emag or Pmag? Same thing. And add in the time to install and get them right.
I'm building a pusher and Cozy builders always have to buy a prop extension of 6" to 8," which costs about another $1000.
One day when I entertained unhappy thoughts about all the problems of rotary installations, I worked on the Lycoming side of the equation and was surprised to figure out all other other stuff I still had to do if I gave into the dark side like...you know who. (Hi, Rusty!)
Just do a good job of comparison if you get some numbers.

In just as unrelated news, I wrote the final check for my Lyclone engine for the RV-8. It's being test run this week, and will ship next week. The total... ONLY $21,600 :-)
Rusty, John Dyke keeps telling us builders that a rotary installation will cost more than a Lycoming. You're the only person I know that has written checks for both in such a short time, and recently. So all told, how would you compare the cost? How about if you had to figure in your time at shop rates?
