I realize that all mechanical devices have their own set of problems,
but you've just got to love this piece of marketspeak.  We're going to
replace overpriced, shoddy equipment we sold you so that we're
consistent with our commitment not to sell shoddy equipment.

 
Actually, none of these cranks have failed, so maybe they're only potentially shoddy :-)  
 
It sounds like CYA tactics, much like that silly fuel tank "mandatory service bulletin" that Van's just put out.  Just a sign of the times we live in I'm afraid.  As experimental folks, we can choose to ignore these warnings, however, there's reason to think that the insurance company might get you if you ever had a problem related on something that was considered a "mandatory" action by the manufacturer.
