Note
that it is not necessary to go from ‘internal’ regulator, to
‘external’ regulator. The internal voltage regulator gets its
feed for the field current directly from the alternator output. You can
still use the internal regulator, you just have to ‘break’ the
internal connection from the alternator output to the regulator. No other
parts required.
This
was written up in CONTACT! magazine years ago, and if I’m forced (well,
actually if anyone is interested) I will see if I can dig it up.
