Ed,
I wrote up step-by-step
instructions a while back on converting an ND alternator from internal
regulator to external. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will
send it to them directly. This conversion makes it so that you can shut
the thing down by cutting the power to the field wire as is the method used by
the Perihelion Design OVM.
Note that it is not necessary to go from
‘internal’ regulator, to ‘external’ regulator. The
internal voltage regulator gets its feed for the field current directly from
the alternator output. You can still use the internal regulator, you just
have to ‘break’ the internal connection from the alternator output
to the regulator. No other parts required.
This was written up in CONTACT! magazine
years ago, and if I’m forced (well, actually if anyone is interested) I
will see if I can dig it up.
