Ed,

I wrote up step-by-step instructions a while back on converting an ND alternator from internal regulator to external.  If anyone is interested, let me know and I will send it to them directly.  This conversion makes it so that you can shut the thing down by cutting the power to the field wire as is the method used by the Perihelion Design OVM. 

 

Note that it is not necessary to go from ‘internal’ regulator, to ‘external’ regulator.  The internal voltage regulator gets its feed for the field current directly from the alternator output.  You can still use the internal regulator, you just have to ‘break’ the internal connection from the alternator output to the regulator.  No other parts required.

 

This was written up in CONTACT! magazine years ago, and if I’m forced (well, actually if anyone is interested) I will see if I can dig it up.
