If anyone has an extra $219 laying around, and wants a brand new alternator, you can consider the #2026 "ignition activated" Ultra Mini from East Coast Automotive Electric.   http://www.ecae.com/alt1.html

 

This, in my mind is the best of both worlds.  It's internally regulated, and also has a wire that will turn the unit on and off at any time.  It's also tiny, just like the other ND type alts.
