I use the cheap Chinese jobs, so I just put in new each season rather than loose one during operation. These are small diameter and respond instantly to throttle movements. The needle moves as fast as the tach needle.
 
A good name brand American built would not be near the problem and at more constant throttle settings would eliminate the need for quick response times. I am guessing that the life would be shorter than that same probe downstream a few inches, but it should be in years of service not hours as is my situation.
