Now this is thinking outside the box... or was it just a mistake that worked? Either way it may be looking at.

When you pull on the handle (which is still attached to the wire), the free end of the shroud is pushed toward the fixed end of the wire, but with more force than trying to push the wire out of the shroud.  This won't work unless there is some curvature or extra length in the control cable, and it has to be free to move.
