With appologies to Tracy if he has already suggested this. I have a suggestion to everyone starting to tune their engine after first start-up. There are several sources where you can get a O2 sensor with a small display for tuning. Several motorcycle sources sell them, with a small weld on bung for your exhaust. In the muffler or tailpipe you can check your mixture rich to lean directly and easily. These things cost less than 80 bucks and I think Summit Racing also sells 'em.
My suggestion would be to use PREMIUM auto gas for tuning. No lead to worry about but closer to 100LL if you travel and must use it. The little meter makes it easy to tell where you're at mixture wise prior to adjustment. It could even be plumbed into the cockpit for HS taxi testing. Most of the systems include a plug to close the bung after testing if you don't want to leave the O2 sensor in place. This takes some of the mystery out of understanding wher your mixture is to begin with. Just a suggestion
