Bill,

The late model Goldwing alternator is out of the question for me.  I pulled the side cover off my ’95 GL1500 and measured the alternator and it measures 5.5” in length.  I only have 5” between the crank pulley and firewall.  Looks like it could possibly work for those with more space though.

Mark, The reason for the dampener is that Honda links the alternator direct to the crank and spins it the opposite direction as the crank to offset a little of the torque reaction of the engine being longitudinally mounted.
