Oh My GOD. The last motorcycle I would choose as an example, a Norton. Well maybe a Triumph. This is not old tech this is ANCIENT tech. Hell the Kawasaki Z1's I first worked on in 1973 were 20 years more current than a Norton using a Ziener Diode for cripes sake. DO NOT USE THIS SYSTEM! They were only marginal on a motorcycle in 1960! There are many much better motorcycle charging systems, say anything '75 or later.
I like some old motorcycles including Nortons but Lucas Electrics... They didn't call Lucas the "Lord of Darkness" because they always worked well!

There is an intersting write-up on this site, explaining how the generator, heat sink and diode work on the crankshaft mounted generator for a motorcycle atnbsp; http://jerrydoe.com/electrical/chargingsystem.htmnbsp;nbsp;nbsp; nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Note the brand, quot;Lucas.quot; nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; They are using a shunt regulator.
