I found websites and several books that described how to build generators.  Unfortunately, none of them could provide information on the size of magnets, number of magnets, number of coils, or wraps per coil to get a given output (for us 14.2V and 35A at 6000RPM).  That was the reason I was looking for a permanent magnet DC motor.  A DC motor is just a DC generator in reverse 8*).  If I could find a 500W DC motor rated at 6000RPM I'd be set.

I think it would be a relatively simple task with this information.  Well, simple compared to a plans built airplane.
