Congratulations, Rusty.
The first one is always the hardest. Yes!,
number 2 rebuild is much easier/quicker (don't ask me how I know). Well, -
OK, I too my first rebuild of my current 91 block and after about 3-4 hours had
it back in the airplane, pour coolant in and sat there sobbing as it leaked out
the block. Another hour or so to take it back off, cart it back to
the shop and 15 minutes to fix the problem, then back to the aircraft,
etc. Next time I swore I would pour water in back at the shop to
check for leaks - then I'd probably complain about water leaking all over me as
I installed it.
I agree I don't think the hylomar will hurt
anything (as long as you don't have fist size gobs remaining in the chamber
{:>). I found the same thing on a new oil chain myself - my old
one had perhaps a tiny bit more sag, but the new one didn't seem to meet the
specs called for. Been flying with it for 260 hours, so far.

Subject: [FlyRotary] Engine
assembled
Greetings,
I put the engine back together yesterday with the help of Bruce’s
excellent video. Seems to be
glued together more than bolted. Spent way more time with a brush than a
wrench. Everything went reasonably well with a couple
exceptions. My overhaul kit was
missing the corner seal springs, and I didn’t realize that the oil seal
springs weren’t included in the kit, so
I had to use springs from the original assembly. I also had to use one corner seal,
because I managed to break one (don’t ask).
I still measure ½” of slop
on the new oil chain, which is the same as the one I took off. According to
the video, that’s too much slop, so I have a message into Tracy and Bruce
about it. I'm guessing this has to be normal, but it was a good
place to stop last night, and I'll wait for an answer before putting the front
cover on.
The engine has
a K spacer, and .002” end play.
Turning the engine shows that everything seems to work, and that I got
too much Hylomar on the housings.
It seems to be collected by the apex seals, and I’ve wiped off all I
can get to through the exhaust ports.
Shouldn’t hurt anything.
When I get an answer on the oil chain, I’ll close up the front cover.
Overall, I’m convinced it will
run, and I’m pretty happy with my first rebuild.
Rusty (still far from
being back in the air)
