Umm.. the spacer is a good idea.. but what about... simply taking a torch to the pickup tube, heating it cherry red and straightening it just a tad... it keeps from having to ensure sealing on TWO flange surfaces instead of one (both sides of the spacer).. and it still shouldn't impinge on the mount/splash plate if installed.
 
Right you are Dave.  I don't like the idea of two flanges either.  Actually, I planned to look at the pickup tube, and compare it with another that's in the box of crap.  It seems like I may  have used the longer one originally, and that might explain why I had less than a quart left in my pan following the oil cooler split.  I would probably try to tweak it down myself if possible.  
 
I also haven't ruled out doing something unusual with a custom pan either.
