There were only 2 (maybe 3) years around 1984 when the RX-7 used the oil to
water exchangers (and no oil/air cooler). I flew one for about 3 hours
before going back to the oil/air version. Oil was always near redline and
word on the street says that it didn't work well in the car either.

OK, hold on now. I could
have sworn that the 1st gen RX-7 had only the oil/water exchanger, but in
looking through parts lists, it appears that it had that in addition to a
normal oil cooler under the radiator. If that's the case, then the
oil/water exchanger alone won't do me much good.
If you've got one, let me know, but I've got some
more checking to do before I decide if it's worth messing with.
