Now you are right, Ed, into and out, the outer area has more surface area,
can clean better and is the natural way to flow, into through filter and
out
through smaller, less exposed to other oil and or contaminants, center
area.
At least, that's the way I had it explained to me back in '52 while
working
on one of them flathead fords that had a big $2.50 (for the whole thing)
orange, bolt on the left head filters on it. Just check it out on the hot
tub, should work the same way.  I guess it still works that way. <g>
