No question Trane is sort of the Cadillac of the split units, right now; but, I would agree that 10 grand seems to be a little high.  I just replaced both the condensing unit and air handler for about 5 grand, with duct work changes adding about a thousand for over 4000 square feet. Get a few more quotes, a little oversize can be useful but not too much, controls price to a great degree and realize these old boys sometimes make used car and tire salesmen look thoughtful and compassionate. Find one you and others have faith in.  jofarr

I would advise you to get some other estimates on the heat pump.  I have two in my house.  Both went out a year apart from each other.  I got them replaced for about $1500/ea. installed.  This was from a small, one-man operation.  That is for the compressor box that sits outside only.  If that’s all you need, you should be able to do better than $10K.
