You know, I keep banging myself on the head and saying why didn't think of that.  No wonder I have a headache every now and then.  A little analysis would go a long way toward making you feel better about thinking there is nothing wrong, assuming you have compression and oil pressure when re-cranked.  Here is web site to look at that tells you a couple of places to look over.  http://tinyurl.com/72cy8

certainly know of a shop that can analyze your oil
(from the filter) for metallic contaminents.  Or
call around to some big rig service centers.  Many
truckers have the oil analyzed at every oil change.
