I was thinking that there is room for the stationary gear teeth inside  the open side of the rotor. Even without cutting the gear teeth down some. If I get time I will dummy up a set and see if that is the case. The bearing runs to the end of the gear teeth and you wouldn't want to give up any bearing support.
