I still need to find some references for unshrouded fan design though.......
Any ideas or hints?

I talked to Bernie for a while tonight, and thought of one problem with any design that requires a shroud, or fan larger than about 22" in diameter. I want to be able to roll this thing in and out of my garage without having to disassemble it. One of the first things I did was to take off the 3-blade prop, and put on a 2-blade for that very reason (and the fact that the Warp Drive prop looked like it had eaten an entire cylinder). I'm pretty skeptical that I'll do better than a belt drive with a two blade prop. Thanks,
Rusty
There's a guy here in MS flying an 'ultralite' with a Honda CBR600 (?) motorcycle engine mounted low in the airframe (pusher). He uses a racing motorcycle chain up to a propeller shaft in pillow block bearings up where the engine is supposed to be. I've only met him once, but he claimed to have quite a few hours on it & flew it from somewhere down on the coast to an ultralite flyin here in Jackson a couple of years ago. With 100+ hp racing bikes common now, the chain shouldn't have too much trouble with a 1rotor. 3-1 ratio shouldn't be too hard to do.
