   Ed gave a nice technical explaination.  I used to live in a quaint little town in Calif. called Tehachapi.  The flyers in that area had a shorter explanation: "thermals"

Thanks Dale.  Funny, I didn't even think of the possibility of thermals.  I was thinking of things like how Lynn's engine builder said there was more power with cooler oil and water temps.  I figured that they were as cool as they were going to get on initial climb out.  Thermals is a more likely explanation though, and it doesn't make me feel quite so stupid :-)  Let's see, it's 4:15 am, and I just got back to the hotel.  Probably should sleep a little now.  Cheers,
