Ernest, in the days when Lycomings ruled the world of aircraft engines, they
were notorious for the amount of oil they ejected in the air vented from the
crankcase.  Because citizens complained about the rain of oil, the EPA...
Opps sorry a different time continuum.

Actually, the amount of oil ejected in some cases could amount to an
appreciable amount over several hundred hours of running.  So some smart guy
rigged up a air/oil separator so they could recover the oil into the sump.
That also kept the messy oil from covering the underside of the aircraft.
That is the reason the air/oil separator became common aboard aircraft
engines.  Since gas burn better than oil and oil lubricates better than
gasoline, I decided to return the oil back to the sump.

Nothing to keep you from burning your oil drops if that suits you better.
Not implying that returning your oil is better - just my preference.

I was under the hood of my Mom's Ford today.  I took notice that the
vent was plumbed back to the intake after the throttle.  I'd never have
thought about it except for this thread.

Why wouldn't you plumb it back to the intake since it is a low pressure
area (post throttle), and it'll never make a mess there since it'll get
pulled back in and burned?
