Paul,
Ohm my!
Consider Tempest plugs - they claim to have solved the resistance
problems.........

Continuing the story in my Legacy with the rebuilt starter adapter
which is now installed and works really well with the new old-style TCM
starter. My initial impression now that it is installed is that the
adapter is an easy rebuild provided you have the arbor press and proper tools
for bearing removal and pressing in the drawn bearings. It would
be a great little project to machine a set of these press tools but perhaps
they are out there already since this has to be a common tool. The
drawings are on the sites for Timken and others
manufacturers.
Magnetos: Both Magnetos had to go back on and I've
never timed them before so it took me a few days to get the equipment and make
sure I did everything correctly. Today, with the help of Ed Martin we
timed the newly IRAN'd mags to 22 degrees BTDC and then tested everything by
hand to make sure we had sparks and in the right order. we rotated all
by hand for a while just to make sure everything went well and because I had
that previous Niagara adapter problem. I then had an idea to review a
past LML note about resistors in Champion spark plugs. The top plugs
were removed so I decided to check them for fun.
Out of the top 6
plugs, the resistances were 65,000 ohms to 2.5 Megohms.
A
few sites suggest 1500 ohms is normal and 5000 would be the upper limit.
I did not test the bottom six plugs. They are probably original plugs
with 500 hours, massives and I guess Chapter 7 means new plugs which are
probably overdue.
Tomorrow we put fuel to the io550 and see how things
work. Plugs on order.
