You just confirm to me the decision I have made. I too have a performance 
engine, I'm still building and have not ran my engine yet.  This Saturday 
I'm planning to take my engine to Barrett Precision Engines in Tulsa, 
Oklahoma.  It makes me sick to have to pay for a tear down on a supposedly 
brand new engine, but I just don't feel right to put my wife and friends 
in this aircraft with that much of an unknown.

Not that anyone needs more information on this subject, but another
data point.  I had 18 hrs on my Performance Engines IO-550 when I had
it rebuilt.  There were numerous issues, main bearing out of whack,
Starter bearing cracked, oil pump gears grinding each other away, lots
of evidence of a "dirty" build with multiple score marks, but I think
the most damning was the use of regular hardware store nuts (not high
strength ones) on the crankcase through bolts.  Please, Please if you
know anyone comtemplating having Performance build them an engine,
talk them out of it.  You at least will save them a lot of money, and
maybe something more dear.
