I was fascinated by your piece in the latest LNN about the problems that you
have had with the gear refusing to respond to commands, albeit
intermittently.
I have just done the final assembly of my hydraulics. (This will be the
subject of another write up for the LNN) I had absolutely no problems at
all with it, not a leak in sight and flawless operation of the gear in both
directions. The freefall feature worked beautifully with the plane on the
shop jacks. Score one for me. Pride truly comes before a fall!
One of my friends poked his head into the garage and of course I had to
demonstrate my new toy. The gear was in the down position. Select gear up,
the sound of silence rang through the garage. Check all temporary
connections. All correct. Try again, still no response. Play with
freefall valve, bleed off pressure and eventually I get the thing to work.
Sounds of mirth from friend and questions about what it would be like to fly
with gear down or land with it up. Exit ex friend!
I have had this happen to me two or three times and had put it on the back
burner for resolution. I had concluded that I had a pressure switch that
was staying open, either because it was defective or because it had residual
pressure. I have the perfect test bed right now as I have the plane on the
jacks, the pump and controls are fully wired and I have an old gear switch
wired in for test purposes. I also have built in two "T"s for a connection
to two pressure gauges (HP and LP) which will be permanently plumbed. The
gauges will be located on the console. They will be connected to the "T"s
by hose as I need to be able to move them around to get at the other
components in the console. I do not have the hoses as yet so the gauges are
not connected. I will get busy on finalising the final location of the
gauges and specifying the hoses and then I will start the testing. I will
keep you informed as I go. Please let me know if in the meantime you have a
solution.
Kind regards
Ian
