It sounds like they are the standard back up rings used in many cylinders. It also sounds like they are sized slightly too big for the bore of your (our) cylinders. Many shops send out hydraulic overhauls to avoid such problems. All I can say is practice makes perfect. Probably not what you wanted to hear...
