The head on your hard drive is kind of like your plane in ground effect - it "flies" on a cushion of air a few microns above the surface of your hard disk. If you reduce the air density, it will do the same thing your plane will - stop flying. From what I've heard, most hard disks are good to about 10,000 feet, and I've heard of some that have been used to 15,000 feet, but much after that you're pushing your luck.
