I used LEDs and have been very happy with the results. They have excellent visibilty in daylight. Dimming at night is accomplished by switching in an additional resistor.
A push-to test button applies a voltage to all four LEDs. ..and the price is right.

took possession of my legacy. :) the gear down lights are too small
and difficult to see on a bright day. i searched and got only one hit
on what people are doing here. any suggestions on what to use? appreciate the advice
