CO2 is heavier than CO because of the extra oxygen molecule. CO, with only 2 molecules, is a relatively light gas with an atomic weight in the neighborhood of O2 or N2. It mixes so well with our atmosphere that location of the sensor is fairly non-critical. I think the manufacturers recommend mounting on the wall about 18 inches below ceiling level due to the fact that there is sometimes less air movement and mixing up at ceiling level in a typical room. We are talking here about differences in detection time of seconds, not minutes or hours. If the detector is anywhere in the room with you, you will have plenty of warning, particularly if there is a heater in the room causing air currents to rise to and mix everything up. This applies to an aircraft cabin as well.
