Good point.
In my younger days a friend and I used to go up and play in his
Citabria: cutting toilet paper, ramming balloons filled with natural
gas released by friends on the ground -- and chasing ducks.  When the
ducks thought we were too close they'd fold their wings and dive.  I'd
guess this is an instinctive reaction.  I'd bet that more often than
not when a bird thinks it's in trouble it heads for the deck; so trying
to pass under them is likely the worst thing to do.
