Gentlemen,

A few observations on the engine thread:

1) Having had a TSIO 550 fail in flight due to an induction tube coming loose and then experiencing the 20 min glide from FL250 to landing, I can tell you from personal observation that the majority of the cabin noise in a IVP is from the air blast NOT the engine.   The same holds true for the vibration.  When the engine stopped the noise continued.   The FAA FSDO was kind enough to play my ATC tape for me which both preceeded and followed my Maday call and the only thing which changes in the sound on tape was the pitch of my voice!  The ambeint background noise was identical.

2) As for LOP operations, one aspect which has not been mentioned is the lower lead levels in our fuel verses 20 years are and the solution of running Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel to compensate.   I found that if you add 4 oz of MMO to 10 fal of 100LL and run LOP your engine actually runs smoother than at ROP operations.   Also at cruise power settings your temps are LOWER at LOP than at ROP.

3) Since the TSIO 550 is the same engine whether installed in a Lancair or a Malibu and given that the Piper maual says run it LOP and since TCM told Piper to say this....why would it change if you put it in a  different plane?

4) While I agree Lancair factory planes have more hours individually than many of us put together, I am reminded of the fact a great many of these hours are spent demonstrating the planes for potential customers.  It seems that real world operations in long range cruise flight is more applicable.

Just a few thoughts.
