Regarding smoothness, I was thinking more along the line of the 320's and 360's, they are not naturally smooth. Admittedly the TSIO-550 in DQ is, barring turbines, by far the smoothest powerplant I have ever flown behind and that was well lean of peak to boot. Reliability goes back to to my now corrected statement, "there is room for improvement". This also applies to my quickly written posts that haven't been thought out completely.
