I put a piece of pipe across the fuselage with wood blocks as pivots. The pipe was just galvanized pipe with the threaded ends. On one end I made a crank handle with pieces of threaded pipe and elbows. I used rope from the wheel to the pipe and wrapped the rope around the pipe several turns. I made two stops for the crank handle so that I could hold the pipe in half turn increments. With this mechanism, I was able to raise and lower the main gear 1 half of a turn at a time and hold it in any position that I wanted. I was working alone and it worked very well for me.
